Nitrogen deposition
Nitrogen by itself is a harmless gas. For instance, about 80 per cent of the air we breathe is made up of this gas. It only becomes a problem when it reacts with oxygen to form nitrogen oxide (NOx). Examples include ammonia from agriculture and animal husbandry, exhaust fumes from road traffic and emissions from industrial activities. The precipitation of these nitrogen compounds, also known as nitrogen deposition, is eventually harmful to nature and biodiversity.
Nitrogen deposition is currently seen as a major problem for the built environment and industry. Not so much for the construction phase, as this is only temporary. But for the use phase of a housing project or the expansion of a distribution centre, it must be demonstrated that it will not be detrimental to nature and the environment, such as Natura2000 areas.
