Prevention of serious injury
One of the fire safety aspects that may require more attention in a project is evacuation safety. Preventing future casualties is of course one of the most important preconditions in the design process. Cauberg Huygen assesses the applicable legal requirements and takes into account the project-specific circumstances. For example, the existing situation has limited possibilities for modications, the building project involves disabled residents or it’s an event location involving a large group of people.

Project-specific circumstances
For example, the escape conditions in a fire compartment may be poor locally, the likelihood of panic must be taken into account at an event, and with high rooms, because of the buffer space for smoke, more time is available before the escape route becomes blocked. In addition, fire control systems such as ventilation, a sprinkler system, and proper detection can make a positive contribution to improving evacuation safety.

Bespoke solutions
For all such scenarios, custom solutions can be applied, assessing whether the available escape time (ASET) is greater than the required escape time (RSET). The available escape time can be determined by NEN6093 and simple stationary zone models. In addition dynamic smoke dispersion models such as CFD can be used. The required escape time can be estimated with simple manual calculations, based on a field assessment, but also with a dynamic evacuation model.
